Primary School Squash Program: Stage 1
Thanks to funding from the North West Counties Squash League (NWCSL), Bollington Health & Leisure have been able to start a Primary School Squash Program at three of Bollington’s Primary Schools: Dean Valley, Bollington Cross and St John’s.
Over the course of 7 weeks, Year 4 children will have a basic introduction to Squash; culminating in a school vs school Squash tournament on week 7.
Before the Easter Holidays, we delivered the first 2 sessions to each of the above Schools. We held the sessions in the school hall and were able to introduce Squash to a total of 71 children – 41 Boys and 30 Girls.
These sessions were a great way for our coaches to introduce Squash at a basic level to a large number of children. With the use of a rebound net to mimic the front wall of a Squash court, and benches to create mini floor courts for a quick game of “Floor Squash”, the spirit and foundations of the game could be taught; without the need for a 10m x 7m x 6m enclosed concrete box!
Both kids and coaches enjoyed taking part in Bollington Health & Leisure’s first ever School Squash program. With 4 more weeks to go, there is still plenty of hard work to be done by both coaches and children alike before Dean Valley, Bollington Cross and St John’s face off to become the first ever “Happy Valley Primary School Squash Champions”!
The next 4 sessions will be delivered to between 6 and 14 of the Year 4 children who attended these first 2 sessions. After Easter those Children will come down to the Squash Courts at Bollington Health & Leisure to complete 4 more hours of Coaching before the tournament week.
During the Easter break we are running two Easter Squash Crash Courses. We invited the Year 4’s who took part in the first stage of the school program, to attend either one of our two courses. It would be their first experience of Squash on a Squash court (as opposed to a School Hall)! The courses are also open to any child between the ages of 8 – 13.
For 1-hour a day, every day of the week, the children can come down to the courts for some Beginner Coaching and learn to play Squash in a far more compressed period of time than normal. The choices are either: 9am – 10am or 10am – 11am on Week 1 (3rd – 6th April), or the same times on Week 2 (9th – 13th April).
Over the two-week period we have had a total of 18 children attend the courses! (There is still time to book onto next week’s course!) Over 60% of the attendees were as a result of the Primary School Program; which after only 2 sessions in the School hall was great to see.
Furthermore, as a result of the first week of the crash course we have seen a spike in interest in our regular Junior Coaching sessions! So much so in fact we have had to increase the number of sessions on offer – and that’s before the second Course next week has even begun!
Looking forward we hope to further increase the sessions we can offer at the Leisure Centre to keep up with the increasing demand for Junior Coaching. After a successful and enjoyable first week running the Crash Courses, we are excited for next week’s course and what it may bring. We are looking forward to starting the second stage of the Primary School Program after Easter; which will no doubt be challenging, but equally enjoyable and rewarding.
Overall there is a lot going on at the moment at Bollington Health & Leisure! To keep up to date with the goings on then follow Bollington Squash Club on Facebook!
